In 2009, the laser hair removal industry was worth $244 million, and 60% of people ages 18 to 29 admit wanting the procedure. Not everyone welcomes laser hair removal with open arms, however- especially the razor companies. It’s no secret that there are many controversies brewing in the world of cosmetic treatments and surgical procedures. Here, though, are several facts about popular procedures that have been endlessly debated.
1. Laser Hair Removal
Unlike what you might expect, laser hair removal comes with no guarantees. In most cases, though, hair is either gone after several treatments, or significantly lightened. This procedure makes use of lasers aimed at the hair follicle, heating it up so as to inhibit any future growth. Will this procedure be painless? No- 89% of patients reported at least mild pain as a result of the lasers. Of patients surveyed, though, 87% say they would do the treatment again. The cost of laser hair removal depends on how many treatments are required, and which part of the body is being treated; the average price of underarm hair removal, for example, is $170.
2. Sun Spot Removal
Laser resurfacing is one of the most common professional methods for sun spot removal. As you can imagine from the name, sun spots, which are alternatively referred to as age spots or brown spots, are caused by sun exposure. So if you’ve been lucky enough to avoid them, start slapping on the sunscreen now! This procedure can be controversial because many people ask, “Shouldn’t we be happy with who we are?” But many dislike coping with uneven and patchy skin tones, and for some, sun spot treatment is well worth it.
3. Is Brown Spot Removal Expensive?
The average price of brown spot removal is about $550, though, like laser hair removal, the expense will vary depending on the location, size, and persistence of your sun spots. Be careful, though, and work with someone who is qualified and experienced in the procedure, not just whoever offers it for the lowest price. One commentator on RealSelf review site documented how, during her fifth session, the procedure resulted in a scarred burn area on her cheek.
