A recent study shows that the most common disability in the United States is limited mobility. The results of this study also indicated that roughly 53 million Americans currently live with a mobility issues or another type of disability. There are a variety of devices that enable individuals with mobility issues to become and/or remain independent. Bruno vehicle chairs and lifts, for example, may be recommended to provide assistance in this regard. In addition to Bruno vehicle chair lifts for vans, there are lifts for other types of vehicles, such as cars, trucks, and SUVs.

While it does depend on a home’s entryway, many individuals may need to have modifications made to accommodate an electric wheelchair or another type of mobility device. In addition to platform lifts for homes, power chair ramps may also be recommended. Since there are specific residential wheelchair ramp codes, it’s important to consult with a company that adheres to ADA standards. If door openers are also required, then ADA door opener requirements must be followed.

HomeAdvisor’s 2016 Aging in Place Report showed that installing grab bars and entryway wheelchair ramps were the most-requested jobs for home service professionals. Since more than half of the injuries sustained by older adults occur at home, grab bars and other devices can assist with preventing these injuries from occurring.

Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that almost 235,000 of the injuries that are sustained every year occur in the bathroom. This is just one of the reasons why 48% of homeowners over 55 are planning to modify this room to age-in-place, as indicated in HomeAdvisor’s 2016 report.

Estimates indicate that by 2030, approximately 20% of the country’s population will consist of older adults. Since most of the individuals within this age bracket want to live in their own homes for as long as possible, making modifications to their homes is an important task.

Both the American Association of Retired Persons and the National Conference of State Legislatures reported that for individuals over 65, 90% would like to remain in their homes for as long as they can. Given this, it’s important to consult with a home service professional to assist with making home and vehicle modifications.
