A cervical radiculopathy, also known as slipped disk or a herniated disk, is a serious medical condition. Essentially, the bones that form the spine in an individual’s back are cushioned by small, spongy discs. When these discs are healthy, they act as shock absorbers for the spine and keep the spine flexible. A herniated disc occurs when one of these discs is damaged, which causes it to bulge out of place or even break open. This can result from general wear and tear, such as when performing jobs that require constant sitting and squatting. However, herniations often result from jobs that require lifting or a traumatic injury to the spine. A herniated disk can be quite painful. If the disc is pressing a nerve, it can also cause numbness and weakness.
